Are you originally from St. John’s or another part of the island? My family’s from Newfoundland but moved to Toronto before I was born so I don’t think I can reallly call myself a Newfoundlander, can I? I like to think I’m truly a Newfoundlander in spirit. It is my favourite place to be, and I feel more “at home” there, than I do in Toronto. As soon as I get off the ferry in Port aux Basques or land at Stephenville airport, I always feel like I can exhale.
Born and raised in St. John’s (east end) though my parents are from Harbour Grace.
Being a Newfoundlander is a state of mind and it sounds like you are there. In my books you’re in if you enjoy the “Old Sam”…. its like Screech but better.
My wife is from Toronto but when we travel back to the Rock she refers to it as home. The place grows on you.
I wish I had the time and the money to be there more often.
As a kid, we’d drive “home” every summer and when I was a teenager I’d fly instead to avoid three days in a car with my brother and my parents. I’m ashamed to say that I haven’t been back since 1999. Work, money, and a house that is falling down around my ears have all conspired against my wish to visit once a year. I will, however, be going back this summer. (The countdown has begun!!) My mom is from a tiny little village called Robinson’s and 2007 is it’s Come Home Year. It may as well just be known as my mom’s family reunion because pretty much everyone in Robinson’s is a relative. I’ve never been to St. John’s but will be spending a few days there. What bars would you recommend?
I don’t do the bar scene very often… but when i’m home I usually end up at Christian’s (www.christianspub.com) or at the bar above Peddler’s On George (I don’t know its name).

Since you mention Andy Jones – thought you’d appreciate knowing that in December he released an audio recording of Uncle Val material.
Letters from Uncle Val is published by http://rattlingbooks.com
available as an audio CD or digital download
